About Us

THE COMMONWEALTH INSTITUTE (TCI) is an English language teaching and test preparation center specialized in the INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE

TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS) – a globally recognized English language proficiency assessment system developed by the University of Cambridge in the UK. As an English language teaching, diagnostics and test preparation center, we provide companies and institutions a full range of language tutorial services to support their recruitment and human resource development objectives.

Our Teaching Resources

TCI has a high-calibre teaching staff comprising native speakers, seasoned grammarians and specialists in ESL and TESOL. It also has an extensive library of teaching materials in various media. These materials were acquired from various sources like Cambridge University Press, Longman and Thomson, among others.

 

Our Teaching Methodology

We draw form a wellhead of global best practices in the teaching of the English language. Apart from the traditional grammar translation and communicative language teaching practices, our teachers rely heavily on corpus linguistics to broaden the student’s lexical range, develop fluency and improve phraseology.

Our Facilities

All our classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped for multi-media instruction. A modern speech laboratory is used for skills training in phonetics and listening. To optimize the learning experience, class sizes are kept deliberately small at 8 students to a class, resulting in a teacher-student ratio that allows semi-individualized instruction as well as group learning activities.

Our Business PhilosophyWe believe in delivering total instruction in the English language - instruction that will enable our students to achieve proficiency in language use in any communication setting, be it marketing and sales, account management, training or contact center work. Our coursework therefore covers a broader area of study and is heavily skills-focused.

The Course is in 4 parts: Grammar Remedial, Vocabulary Development, Communicative Language and Phonetics.
Course ContentGrammar Remedial: English Tense System, Modals and Semi-Modals, Passives, Questions, Verb Complementation, Reporting, Articles/Determiners/Quantifiers/Intensifiers, Clauses and Conjunctions/Connectives/; Vocabulary Development: Laboratory work using the 10-unit Verbal Advantage Package, the 20-unit English Collocations in Use and 30-unit English Phrasal Verbs in Use;Communicative Language:30 units of Conversational Topics in Business; 15 units of Communicative Language Exercises using Authentic Materials; Phonetics: 6 Laboratory hours of Phonetic Exercises in the Major Consonant and Vowel Sounds and Variants.
